Boys' Home To Host 4-H Horse Club

Boys’ Home Inc. in conjunction with the Virginia Cooperative Extension office is sponsoring a 4-H Horse Club for boys and girls ages 9-18. The Club meets on the second Monday of the month in the Chapel at Boy’s Home from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. All youth ages 9-18 in the Alleghany Highlands are welcome. In addition to one regular business meeting each month, the group will have hands-on, project meetings and field trips. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. Club members will have the opportunity to meet with other horse enthusiasts, learn riding styles, showmanship, horse care, take field trips, attend horse events, and even compete in hippology contests. Owning a horse is not a requirement to participate in the 4-H Horse Program, members may take part in the many non-horse activities available to the group. The main purpose of the club is to educate youth about equines through observation and/or hands-on activities at actual sites where there are horses and to help youth develop leadership and life skills with their peers and adults.

Learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about horses with friends here in the Alleghany Highlands. To find out more call Bonnie Wheatley at 962-3598 or 4-H Extension Agent Christine Hodges at the local Extension Office, 862-0369. Links to the 4-H forms and waivers are below.
